HISTORY: Peru is best known as the heart of the Inca empire, but it was home to many cultures before the Incas arrived. It was at about 2500 B.C. that climatic changes in the coastal regions encouraged Peru's early inhabitants to move toward the more fertile interior river valleys. For the next 1500 years, Peruvian civilization developed into a number of organized cultures. Such cultures included Chavìn and Sechìn.

In Peru about 3000 typical fiestas are celebrated every year. The majority of those are organized to celebrate the day of a saint. This religious day, originally introduced by the Spaniards, was accepted by the Peruvian inhabitants as for them it had little to do with Catholicism, so much more with an old Inca ritual. Especially in the traditional village high up in the mountains or in the jungle, there are several traditional celebrations, that related to ancient myths and/or important agricultural dates.

RELIGION:

Most citizens of Peru are Catholic.
